Former President Donald Trump delivered comedy and jokes at the Alfred E. Smith
Memorial Foundation Dinner in Midtown Manhattan in New York City on Thursday
night, this week. The dinner has since grown to become a political and cultural
hallmark of election season and with just 15 days to go everybody in American
politics was there except Vice President Kamala Harris.
The dinner is a high-profile, white-tie affair, often attended by prominent political
figures, including U.S. presidents and presidential candidates so it’s very surprising
Harris didn’t honour her invite. The dinner has a tradition of light-hearted humor, with
speakers—typically from opposing political parties—roasting themselves and each
other, in the spirit of goodwill and charity, while also reflecting on the Church’s social
mission. 20 minutes of Kamala roasting trump would have added a bit of levity to the
campaign trail.
Advice from her publicist who recommended Call Her Daddy as a podcast choice for
her PR campaign probably also advised her to miss one of the most important
political engagements of the year.
Well this is what Trump had to say.
"I thought it was great, you know, it was for the Catholic Church… a lot of good
people, a lot of good causes and unusually she didn’t show up. You would have
thought she would have showed up last night" Trump commented.
Trump didn't take any breaks from bashing Vice President Kamala Harris, (who
attended virtually) during his headlining remarks at the dinner he calls her absence
disrespectful.
He continued his speech by going for the candidate for Vice President Tim Walz.
”I thought the Democrats were crazy when they said men can have periods! Then I
met Tim Walz!”
The Schumer jabs were absolutely hilarious—timed to perfection. Trump jokes
Chuck Schumer could be "first woman president" if Kamala Harris loses.
Honestly, Trump was a class act, a comedic genius. Who knew a guy that orange
could deliver a roast that well? According to a source close to both men made up
back stage. Trump 78 said to Schumer “You’re my guy, you’re my guy”, and warmly
shook Schumer's hand with both of his
Letitia James, Attorney General of New York City, even gave him a standing ovation.
Think about that for a second. The same woman who’s spent years trying to sue him
was on her feet, applauding!
And let’s not forget when Trump took a swipe at Bloomberg. That moment was
priceless! Bloomberg was sitting there looking absolutely pissed off, appearing
stoned-faced for much of the event. He should have just taken the jabs and laughed
a little like Schumer who was in the teaching end of many of Trumps jokes.
But, Bloomberg and Trump have had a long-standing rivalry, often taking jabs at
each other in public, so it’s possible Bloomberg’s posture was a silent protest or a
deliberate attempt to remain unenthused during Trump’s speech.
Trump also surprised everyone by expressing support for Eric Adams, the mayor of
New York City. Honestly it was wild seeing Adams at such an iconic event,
especially considering the allegations he’s facing. Adams has been charged with
bribery, wire fraud, and soliciting illegal campaign contributions from foreign donors
and let’s not forget his interesting connection to Diddy—Adams gave him the key to
the city just months before both men ended up facing federal charges but he was
there and Trump spent most of the evening assuring him he will basically get away
with it all. If Trump is made president in the next 15 days will he?
Then—what a surprise—the audio “conveniently” cut out during his comments on
former New York City mayor Bill de Blasio. The exact reason for the audio being cut
has not been definitively confirmed, but there is speculation that it was either a
technical glitch or an intentional move by the event organizers, possibly due to the
nature of his remarks. De Blasio has often been a target of Trump's criticism, so this
moment raised some eyebrows, especially given de Blasio’s presence in the city’s
political scene.
At past events, Trump’s jabs, especially against Democrats and political rivals, have
sometimes pushed boundaries, leading to awkward moments. In this case, it may
have been a precaution to avoid the speech escalating into something too
confrontational for the event.
Trump also had some choice words for the Democrats. He said something along the
lines of, “The Democrats are always asking ‘Where’s the evidence?’ Well, it’s right
here. I’m standing in front of you, folks—the best evidence that they’ve lost their
minds.” You can’t argue with that logic, as hilarious as it is tragic!
Trump absolutely cooked at this event, and it might just be his best public speech in
a while. He can take a joke and dish it out, too. Honestly, if he doesn’t win the
presidency, he’s got a solid backup plan as the Roast King.
Historic comedy gold with a sprinkle of truth in it.
The Al Smith Dinner was launched in 1946 and is closely connected to the Catholic
Church as it is a major charitable event organized by the Alfred E. Smith Memorial
Foundation, which supports Catholic charities across New York. The dinner is
named after Al Smith, the first Catholic to be nominated for president by a major
political party in the United States (in 1928). Smith was a former governor of New
York and a key figure in Catholic politics.
