A designer with over fifteen years in the industry and two major brands under his belt, Jonathan Anderson consistently proves that both hard work and talent are essential in the ever-changing, ever-moving world of fashion.
Emerging onto the scene in 2010 as a new progressive and standout menswear designer, winning the adoration of the public for his womenswear designs, which blurred the gender lines and explored new ideas of masculinity and femininity. He then went on to become creative director of Spanish fashion house Loewe in 2013. As founder and creative director of his eponymous brand JW Anderson alongside his role at Loewe, Anderson oversees nearly 16 collections yearly, which is no mean feat considering all the time, effort and planning that goes into each collection, show and campaign. “To achieve longevity as a successful fashion designer, you must be able to run a marathon of creative sprints.” Anderson lives up to this and has become a prominent figure in the industry for his uniquely creative designs at both fashion houses.
Steadily building his brands is one of Anderson's greatest successes, both JW Anderson and Loewe have seen major growth over recent years, receiving critical acclaim whilst being able to maintain a steady balance along the way. Playing a prominent role at both brands, Anderson brought Loewe into a new direction, taking a brand rich with heritage and mixing it with the beauty of poetry and art to create a newer, modern, palatable brand. “I don’t own anything. I make it, I put it out there. That’s it. Ownership is the most dangerous thing for creativity.” To Anderson fashion has to mean something, and this is evident in each collection he produces, using his designs as a way to convey ideas, change and pioneer cultures and influence people, it is a powerful tool.
His recent collections for both JW Anderson and Loewe AW24 have explored the idea of combinations and contradictions. Drawing inspiration from past collections and archives of artists like Michael Clark. With JW Anderson expressing cultural agitation and Loewe processing culture at different ends of the spectrum, Anderson’s talent lies in being effective at both ends producing quality for both brands that express who he is, making each piece not just wearable but relatable. Some standout pieces being JW Anderson x Run Hany Moon shoulder bag, JW Anderson x Wellipets frog loafers, the Loewe pixelated hoodie and Nail polish mules all show the ingenuity of Andersons creative process.
As both his SS24 shows approach its safe to say that Jonathan Anderson's success story is never ending. Having just launched a fashion film titled “I dreamt of Loewe” by both luca Guadagnino and himself, we are given a sneak peek into what the collection will feature next week.
