The biggest collaboration for the brand to date, is with one of the most revered names in fashion, supermodel and fashion icon, Naomi Campbell. The collaboration was first announced by Pretty Little Thing via their Instagram page, with a black and white image of the stunning model and the name of the collection printed across it.
Now, to say this was unexpected is an understatement. Campbell, being someone who is a staple face for luxury and high fashion designer brands, a collaboration with the fast fashion Pretty Little Thing brand would have been an unlikely pairing. However, over the years, Campbell has been more visible and vocal about her passion for the younger generation and also showing her connections to popular culture whether it’s through music or her continued work with artists and creatives of the newer generation.
On Saturday 5th September, the full 70-piece collection was showcased to a room full of a-listers and fashion's favourite faces. It was the perfect timing to kick off the fashion week season in one of the capitals, New York. Models took to the circular runway in the designs, from sequin backless mini dresses, to sleek black jumpsuits and sheer knit maxi’s, the collection had the combination of the “Campbell-elegance” with fun, playful style that would attract the Pretty Little Thing customer. Though the creative direction was by Campbell, she teamed up with emerging designers Victor Anate and Edvin Thompson, dreaming up the model’s first collection with the fast fashion giant.
Although the initial announcement of the collection did spark some criticism about the sustainability aspect of the brand. Campbell answered the concerns saying “It’s a journey of change. Sustainability will come. It will have to.”
Nonetheless, stars such as Teyana Taylor, fellow model Winnie Harlow, Lori Harvey and a daringly dressed Julia Fox were just some of the audience who got to see the show. Campbell herself graced the runway in a sparkly number with her legendary walk and ended the show taking a bow with her fellow designers.
